Over the last few years, we’ve noticed a lovely trend: American clients tracing their family roots back to Scotland, and deciding to make the move — not just to visit, but to properly put down roots and set up a home here. It’s a wonderful thing to be part of, and it’s brought a new dimension to the concierge work we do at Dickory Dock.
Relocating to a new country is never simple, and setting up a home from scratch in an unfamiliar place brings a particular kind of overwhelm. Where do you even start looking for a good electrician? Who do you trust to fit a new kitchen? How do you find curtain makers, designers, or handymen when you don’t know the area, the reputations, or where to look?

We act as the local connector — introducing new arrivals to trusted tradespeople and services we’ve worked with for years, so there’s no guesswork and no risk of ending up with the wrong person for the job. Depending on what’s needed, that might include:

- Interior designers and kitchen fitters to help shape a new house into a home
- Curtain makers, upholsterers, and other specialist finishing trades
- General handyman support for the smaller jobs that come with any move
- Practical local knowledge — from utility providers to where to find good local shops
For clients moving from thousands of miles away, having someone on the ground who already knows who to call — and who can manage that coordination on their behalf — takes a huge amount of stress out of the process. It also means quality control: we only introduce people we’d happily use ourselves.
