A Weekly Shop, a Cup of Tea, and a Chat

companionship elderly clients Glasgow

Some of the most meaningful work we do at Dickory Dock isn’t really about the task at all — it’s about the person behind it.

A few years ago, we were contacted by a solicitor on behalf of an elderly client — a lovely lady who had lived in her home her entire life. She didn’t need practical help in the way people often imagine when they think of a concierge service. What she needed was simpler, and in some ways harder to arrange: a friendly, familiar face each week, a weekly shop done properly, and a bit of company.

So that’s exactly what we did.

Every week, our team collected her shopping list, picked up exactly what she needed, and dropped it round in person — but the visit was never rushed. We’d sit for a while, have a cup of tea, and chat about her week, her family, her memories of the home she’d lived in for so long. For her, that hour mattered just as much as the shopping itself.

It’s a quiet reminder of something we believe strongly at Dickory Dock: not every job is about ticking a box. Sometimes the most valuable thing we can offer is simply showing up, consistently, with warmth and patience.

We work with several clients, families, and solicitors in similar situations — where an elderly relative or client would benefit from regular, reliable contact as much as practical support. Whether that’s a weekly shop, help getting to appointments, or just someone to check in, we tailor the visit to what actually matters to that person.

If you know someone who could use this kind of support — whether they’re a family member, a client, or a neighbour — we’d be glad to have a gentle conversation about how we could help.
