Don’t Judge a Book by Its Cover: The Time We Searched Hundreds of Books for a Client’s Missing Documents
Not every house clearance is straightforward, and this one has always stuck with me. We were asked to travel some distance for a job with one very specific request: go through hundreds of books, one by one, in search of important documentation the solicitors urgently needed.
It wasn’t a job to be rushed, so we made a proper trip of it — two nights in a B&B, working steadily through shelf after shelf, page after page. Sure enough, tucked away between the pages of books that looked, on the surface, like nothing more than an old collection, we found exactly what we were looking for. Every document was carefully filed and organised, ready to hand straight over to the law firm.
The solicitors were delighted — not only had we found what they needed, but by categorising everything as we went, we’d saved them a good deal of time too. It meant they could move forward and properly assist the gentleman’s widow without delay.
It’s a good reminder that you really never know what you’ll find until you take the time to look — sometimes quite literally between the covers of a book.
